This rifle barrel was excavated in 1966 by Kansas Historical Society archeologists at historic Fort Hays in Ellis County. Still present was the barrel, part of the front sight, and part of the percussion firing mechanism. After cleaning by electrolysis, which uses chemicals and electrical current through a liquid solution to separate the rust from the artifact, partial lettering was revealed. Only the words "Model" and "Junior" could be deciphered.
