Shown are two of the many rim sherds from the Fanning site, an Early Contact period Kansa village in Doniphan County. The larger sherd was collected around the turn of the century by a historian/collector and the other in the 1930s by the University of Nebraska archeologists. They were donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1925 and 1987. The sherd on the left is from a jar and has an outcurving rim with a series of crenellations below the lip. The sherd of the right is also from a jar and has a collared rim with three deeply incised lines below the lip and diagonal slash punctates on the lip interior.
