Both of these pipe fragments were recovered from the Fanning site, an early Contact Period Kansa village in Doniphan County. The white pipe stem and bowl fragment is a trade pipe made of white clay, sometimes called pipe clay. The red pipe bowl fragment was likely carved by the Kansa from a piece of pipestone. Pipes were used during trade negotiations and to mark special occasions. They were collected by the University of Nebraska in the 1930s and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1987.
