This is a drawing of Chief Mahaskah (or White Cloud) the Elder, from "Indian Tribes of North America, with biographical sketches and anecdotes of the principal chiefs". He was born approximately 1784, the son of Mauhawgaw (Wounding Arrow). During Chief Mahaskah's life time, he was involved in signing several treaties that ceded Ioway land to the United States. He settled near the Missouri River on Ioway land, adopting an Anglo-American lifestyle. Mahaskah advocated for the education of Ioway children and non-participation in intertribal warfare. Mahaskah was killed during an inter-tribal attack by the Omaha Indians. He was succeeded as chief by his son.
