Buckmaster was accused of stealing trees, timber, and building materials on August 15 and 21, 1858 from Delaware tribal land in Jefferson County, Kansas Territory. Buckmaster was indicted during the September term of 1858 by the U. S. District Court of the Kansas Territory, First District, in Leavenworth. During the Kansas territorial period, the increase in settlers led to conflict with tribes that were relocated by the government to Kansas.
