These legal documents include warrants, subpoenas, and indictments related to the case of the United States vs. Amar Bertrand. Bertrand was accused of selling liquor to members of the Pottawatomie tribe, specifically Joseph Pennigore, on the Pottawatomie land in Pottawatomie and Leavenworth counties in February of 1859. Bertrand was indicted by the U. S. District Court for the Kansas Territory, First District, during the Spring term of 1859 and by the Second District Court in November of 1859. Alcohol was illegal on Native American lands from 1832-1953.
