These legal documents relate to the 1859 case against Thomas Bennett for larceny in the Kansas Territory. Bennett was accused of stealing a horse from the land of the Delaware Tribe. From the 1830s to 1860s, the Delaware, or Lenape, tribal lands were located on the northern bank of the Kansas river, near Jefferson and Leavenworth counties. During the Kansas territorial period, the increase in settlers led to conflict with tribes that were promised permanent lands in Kansas following the Indian Removal Act of 1830.
