This case file contains a writ and affidavit in case against Lansing Barnes for contempt. On September 23, 1858 Barnes was sent a summons by the U. S. District Court, Kansas Territory, Second District in Lecompton to serve as a juror for the upcoming October court term, but he failed to appear. The writ, issued on February 24, 1859, orders Barnes to appear during the court's March term of 1859 and explain why a fine of ten dollars should not be levied against him. The affidavit, sworn by Dr. M. F. Holaday (Holliday) on November 24, 1858, states that during the 1858 October court term the defendant was confined to bed with an illness.
