This case file contains an indictment, summons, and bond relating to the case against Richard Ballard for selling liquor to Samuel Hawley, a member of the Miami Tribe, on November 20, 1859 on the Miami Reservation in the Kansas Territory. The Miami Reservation was located in parts of present-day Miami and Linn counties. Hawley was indicted by the Third District Court of the Kansas Territory in Fort Scott during the court's fall session. Selling liquor on Native American lands was illegal in the United States from 1832-1953.
