This case file includes warrants and an indictment documenting the case against Robert Anderson for taking trees and timber, worth $500, belonging to the Miami tribe in Lykins County (present day Miami County), Kansas Territory between February 25, 1859 and May of 1859. Anderson was indicted for the crime during the May term of 1859 by the 3rd U.S. District Court in Fort Scott, Kansas Territory. The influx of white settlers beginning in 1854 with the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska act resulted in increased encroachment and destruction of property promised to a variety of Indian nations. The Miami tribe was promised 500,000 acres in what is now Miami county by treaty with the U.S. government in 1839.
