That this small fragment of a molded pipe stem was recovered at a Middle Ceramic period village presents a problem to archeologists. What was a pipe from the 18th- to 19th-centurys doing at a site occupied from 1000 CE to 1500 CE? What often makes a site attractive to one group of people: access to water, food, fuel, above the flood zone, or near trails and roads, often makes it attractive to others at later times. Archeologists call these kinds of sites multicomponent, meaning multiple occupations.
