This dart point base was recovered from an Early Ceramic period camp site in Elk County and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1972. The pink color of the dart base is the result of having been heat-treated prior to its completion in order to make a better knappable chert. After knapping a dart point was mounted to the dart fore shaft, and then thrown with an atlatl. This dart point, manufactured on Permian chert, has a contracting stem.
