This is a half-tone print of Kansas settler and Civil War soldier Reuben Smith (1832-1904), copied from his diary. During his tenure in Kansas, Smith established his farm to include 220 acres of land which he worked while also being elected as justice of the peace, chairman of the Township Board, and member of the Board of County Commissioners. Smith also held other public official roles such as: Kansas Legislature for the Osawatomie district and a member of the Board of Trustees of the State Insane Asylum for a short period and resigning to work as elected steward. After his political career in Kansas and traveling the United Kingdom, Smith returned to Kansas and passed away in 1904 from kidney and bladder complications.
