These five scrapers were just a few of those collected from an American Indian camp site in Elk county and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1972. Two of the scrapers show some pinkish coloring, the result of having the material heat-treated prior to knapping. Another shows some of the cortex, a crusty covering on the outside of the chert, still present. The scrapers may have been hafted onto a handle and used to scrape hides. They would have required periodic resharpening.
