Pawnee Rock was a long-time landmark on the Old Santa Fe Trail, located in Barton County, Kansas. Once the rock formation was much larger and taller, however early settlers and the railroad both harvested rock from the area, diminishing the size of the modern day monument. On the reverse of this photo is written, "Pawnee Rock, Look for names", referring to the practice of many travelers to carve their names into the rock formation.
