This is an undated studio portrait of Bertha Eck, most often known as Aunt Bertha Eck. She was the daughter of early Kansas pioneers Joseph and Augusta Thoes of Alma. Bertha Thoes wed Joseph Eck and the couple raised eleven children in Alma. In her later years, Aunt Bertha rented rooms in her large rambling house to various boarders. One notable boarder of Aunt Bertha Eck was painter August Ohst. Funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission through the Kansas State Historical Records Advisory Board.
