These two gunflints were recovered during the construction of Lake Parsons in Neosho County and donated in 1994 to the Kansas Historical Society. The gunflints were found cached (stored for later use) along with pottery and chert flakes. Gunflints were used to ignite the gunpowder in flintlock pistols and muskets. They could also be used along with a steel as a "strike-a-light" to start a fire. As these two are small they were most likely either for a pistol or as a strike-a-light. The brown on is from southern England and the black and grey one may be made from local chert.
