Shown are four of the many ink bottles recovered in 1966 during excavations at historic Fort Hays in Ellis County. All are what is described as conical or cone ink in shape. The ink bottle on the far left is made of ceramic. The three glass ones are all classified as ring shoulder cone ink bottles. Ink bottles are designed to be stable while filling a pen. Fort Hays was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and is a State Historic Site.
