This is a photograph of Massachusetts Street looking north from the Douglas County Courthouse in Lawrence, Kansas. In the lower right, is the Friend lumber company owned by Carl Edison Friend. The lumberyard's general office was located at 1030 Massachusetts St., and the office, known as "Rock House" was originally a boarding house before Quantrill's Raid and survived the siege. Many houses in West Hills and University of Kansas projects were built with Friend lumber.
