Miles, amusing themselves in their temporary village on the old race-course, near Fort Leavenworth. - From a sketch by F.J. Howell, Leavenworth." After an usuccessful flight for freedom across the Canadian Border, Chief Joseph and some 400 Nez Perce surrendered in October 1877. In November they arrived at Fort Leavenworth on their way to a new reservation in Indian Territory. The Nez Perce were held near the fort through the following spring.
