These photos show William B. Weaver, inmate #4250 at Kansas State Penitentiary. Before his incarceration, Weaver was widely known in the sports world for his career as a professional baseball player, including several years as a major leaguer (1888-94, mostly with the Louisville Colonels). Weaver was a native of West Virginia who migrated to Kansas in the 1880s, eventually settling on a farm near Lakin. He entered the penitentiary in March 1912 and served nearly three years on a Pawnee County conviction for statutory rape.
