Here are two images copied from 4x5 negatives showing Larry Deger (1845-1924). He came to southwest Kansas in November 1868 as a wagon boss for Lt. Col. George A. Custer. When Dodge City incorporated in November 1875, Deger became its first marshal. In his spare time, he was a partner in the McGinty & Deger saloon. In 1877, James "Dog" Kelley reappointed him as marshal. Wyatt Earp served as Deger's deputy in 1876. In 1883, Deger was elected mayor, and he passed ordinances cracking down on prostitution, gambling, drinking and vagrancy. After serving only one term as mayor of Dodge City, Deger retired to private life and in September 1885, he moved to Kiowa in Barber County, Kansas. He married Etta R. Engleman on July 18, 1883 and they had one daughter Bessie. Later, he owned and operated Deger Lumber Company in Velasco, Texas, near the mouth of the Brazos River. On 24 May 1898, he became postmaster for Velasco and served until 1914. Deger died on May 16, 1924 in Houston, Texas.
