The Topeka Hawks minor league baseball team is shown in this photograph from 1956. The Hawks were affiliated with the Milwaukee Brewers, and finished fourth in the Class A Western League with a 70-68 record. Future major league pitcher Marshall Bridges led the Western League in both wins (18) and strikeouts (213); Jack O'Donnell led the league in ERA (3.32). The team outpaced other league competitors with a total attendance of 103,938 during the 1956 season. Seated in the front row of the photo are batboys Dennis Harry and Larry Ray Kietzman. Kneeling in the middle row are (l to r): Ralph Salvon, trainer; Herb Shankman; Bill Schimchak; Stew Alton; Lee Bohlender; Charles Cottier; Mike Jezierski; Dennis Luby; Jack Whitehead; and, Buddy Hull. Standing in the back are (l to r): Chuck Ennis, business manager; Tom Mulcahy; Sherman Jones; Al Weygandt; Glenn Thompson; Jim McDaniel; Marshall Bridges; Sammy Taylor; Jack O'Donnell; Buddy Bates, manager; and Phil Gibson, president. Digital reproduction of the photograph was accomplished through a joint project sponsored by the Kansas Historical Society and the Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame.
