This is a photograph of Herbert and Eliza Steele with M. L. Beeson at their home in Scott County, Kansas. The Steele's arrived in Scott County in 1888. Herbert established their homestead on what is now Lake Scott State Park. He and his wife Eliza Landon Steele first lived in a dugout and later built a four room house of native sandstone. It was the Steeles who noticed the first artifacts at El Quarteleljo while plowing in their field. The original home is now a museum and displays furniture and tools used by the early settlers of Scott County. The Steeles donated 640 acres to the Kansas Forestry, Fish and Game Commission in 1928 which became part of the Lake Scott State Park.
