Albert T. Reid, 1873-1958, is a native of Cloud County. He is posing in front of an easel with a drawing of a WWI soldier who looks like James C. Hughes. A prominent political cartoonist, Reid also was an editor and publisher of newspapers in Topeka and Leavenworth, a prosperous businessman, a composer, and a painter of murals. In the 1890s he opened an art school in Topeka. It is in Topeka that he would have made contact with James White Frierson Hughes, the father of James Clark Hughes. James WF Hughes was the last mayor of Potwin and later a mayor of Topeka. James Clark Hughes was born in Topeka, Kansas, in 1888, and served in the Mexican Border Conflict, World War I, and World War II. During the latter conflict, he commanded a Philippine regiment (Filipino soldiers led by American officers), which surrendered in 1942 on the Bataan peninsula. Hughes spent the next 41 months in various Japanese P.O.W. camps. He was liberated by Russian forces at Camp Hoten, Manchuria, in 1945. Hughes died in 1964 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
