These six spindle whorls or flywheels were recovered from the Fanning site in Doniphan County and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1971 and 1987. These whorls or flywheels were likely used for either spinning yarn or to help in drilling holes. All of the whorls were made from broken shell tempered pottery sherds, reshaped and repurposed for a new function. The Fanning site was a village site, associated with the Oneota and Kansa peoples. It was described at the turn of the 19th- and 20th-century as having numerous "teepee sites" still visible.
