The function of this hematite artifact, donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 2015, is unknown. It was recovered from an Early to Middle Ceramic Period campsite in Coffey County. Hematite is a mineral form of iron oxide and the soft fine grained material enable the artifact's carver to shape the piece.
