This photograph shows students and faculty gathered for a band concert on the campus of Western University. The African Methodist Episcopal Church established Western University on the grounds of the former Freedman's University, located in Quindaro, Wyandotte County, Kansas along the Missouri River. The only historically black college in Kansas, its famous graduates include Eva Jessye and Nora Douglass Holt. Extensive damage caused by a fire in 1924 and a subsequent lack of funding led to the university's closure in 1943.
