This is an wood cut of Jason Clarke Swayze which appeared in Harper's Weekly, January 5, 1867. He came to Topeka in 1873 and started the Topeka Blade which later became the Topeka State Journal. He married Kate Edwards and they had three children Julia Harriet, Annie Laurie and Oscar Kepler. Edwards died in May, 1862. He later married Jennie Erwin and they had two sons Horace Greeley Swayze and J. Clarke Swayze, Jr. Jason Swayze was murdered on the streets of Topeka on March 27, 1877.
