This scoop was made from a bison horn core and a portion of the frontal bone. It was recovered from excavations in 1934 at the Minneapolis archeological site (14OT5) in Ottawa County and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1987. The Minneapolis site was a Smoky Hill Aspect village/camp occupied during the Middle Ceramic period. The dark material on the scoop is a crusty cortex that was deposited on the tool during the time it was in the ground.
