Infielders John Bulkley (on the left) and Doug White of the Topeka Owls minor league baseball team are shown in this snapshot from 1947. Bulkley, a native of Reading, Kansas, spent four seasons in the minor leagues, including two with the Topeka Owls (1947 and 1949). White's 12-season minor league career started in 1935 and, except for 1944-45, ran through 1948. He played for the Owls in three consecutive years (1940-42), and again in 1947. Bulkley batted .295 in 135 games for the Owls in 1947; White batted .272 in 91 games. After his minor league days, John Bulkley received two degrees from Emporia State University, and worked for over three decades as a coach and educator in Mesa, Arizona. Digital reproduction of the photograph was accomplished through a joint project sponsored by the Kansas Historical Society and the Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame.
