This black and white photograph shows a group of people gathered in front of a sod house in Ellis County, Kansas. According to the back of the photograph this was the last sod house to be used in the county. The use of sod was common on the Great Plains for homes due to the lack of wood and other natural resources available. This dwelling has two glass windows which would have been considered a luxury by many pioneers.
