These two photographs show the Kansas River with the Strawberry Hill community in the background. The photographs were taken in connection with the construction of dikes by the Kaw Valley Drainage Board to protect Armourdale (Kansas City) from floods. Strawberry Hill is a Croatian community in Kansas City, Kansas, established by Slavic immigrants at the turn of the 20th century. Although the community was literally torn apart by the construction of Interstate 70 in the 1950s, images of a vibrant Strawberry Hill community persist in the many paintings by Marijana Grisnik.
