Western University is considered one of the earliest African American schools established west of the Mississippi River. In the early 20th century, it was recognized nationally as one of the best music schools. Among its most famous alumni were several women who were influential music pioneers in the early 20th century, including Eva Jessye. The university closed in 1943 and all of the buildings were razed.
