This is a photograph of Roman Nose, a Cheyenne leader, and one of the most esteemed warriors of the Plains Indian Wars of the 1860s. He was killed during the Battle of Beecher Island on September 17, 1868. Roman Nose and his followers attempted to charge Colonel George A. Forsyth and his men on the Arikaree River island. The Cheyenne kept the soldiers pinned down until September 25 when a rescue force finally arrived from Fort Wallace. The photograph was copied from Famous Indian Chiefs by C. I. H. Johnson.
