Richard Steffen enlisted in the Army (Air Force) and was sworn in on October 28, 1942, and served until February 14, 1946, in the 489th Squadron. He was stationed in Midland, Texas, and at Lunken Air Force Base, Ohio and worked as a records clerk. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on Jun 28, 2007, Steffen talked about military experiences in the Second World War. Steffen was born in Haviland Kansas on September 18, 1922. His family moved to Eudora, Olathe, and back to Eudora. He graduated from Eudora Hish School in 1940. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the community institutions receiving grants. The transcript of the interview is presented here; the original video copy of the interview is available through the Watkins Community Museum of History (Lawrence) and through the Kansas State Historical Society.
