A photograph of Anna R. Yowler McAfee, the wife of Reverend Josiah Breckbill McAfee. The McAfee's came to Kansas in 1855 and settled in Leavenworth, but later moved to Topeka. During the Civil War, Rev. McAfee was an officer in the 18th Regiment, Company I, Kansas Volunteers and 2nd Regiment Kansas Colored Volunteers. From 1865 to 1867, he was a private secretary to Governor Samuel Crawford and served as Kansas' 7th Adjutant General from August 18, 1867 - March 3, 1869. Rev. McAfee also went on to be Mayor of Topeka and was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives in 1883 and from 1887-1889.
