A portrait of August Bondi, who came to Kansas in May, 1855, and in the fall of that year, became acquainted with John Brown. Bondi settled in Lawrence and opened a general store. After the burning of Lawrence, he joined John Brown and took part in the battle at Black Jack, the fight at Osawatomie, and different raids along the border. In February 1857, Bondi laid out the town of Greeley in Anderson County and was appointed postmaster. From 1857 to the outbreak of the Civil War, he kept an underground railway station in Greeley. On December 23, 1861, Bondi enlisted in Company K of the Fifth Kansas Cavalry. After his discharge on November 10, 1864, he opened a grocery store in Salina, Kansas. In addition to Bondi's business interests, he served as probate judge of Saline County, clerk of the United States Land Office, and police judge.
