This sepia colored photograph shows members of the Grand Army of the Republic Post No. 339 at Thayer, Kansas. The members are identified by the bronze star bage they wore on their lapels. The bage hung from a chiffon flag and the star depicted a solider and sailor clasping hands in front of a figure of Liberty. The Grand Army of the Republic was organized across the United States, at the close of the Civil War, by veterans of the Union Army as a fraternal organization that provided support to veterans. Some of the men in the photo have been identified. Top Row: G.G. Keener, E.L. Barnes, F.M. Abbott, W. Young, Mr. Keener, Milton S. Elliott, Mr. Ogg, R. Osborne, A. Weiden. Middle Row: J. Smedley, W. McDonald, J.W. Tout, C.T. Winters, C.H. Ryder, R.L. Welah. Bottom Row: H. Perham, John Sperry, H.Cram, John Minnich, W.S. Campbell, Mr. Burkett, Albert M. Whitteker.
