This sepia colored photograph shows a crowd gathered for the grand opening of the Melan bridge in Topeka, Kansas. According to newspaper accounts, hundreds of people were reported to have walked across the bridge during the celebration. The structure built over the Kansas River withstood two major floods before collapsing and killing one motorist on July 2, 1965.
