Staff Sergeant John Elijah Bird enlisted in the Army (Air Force) in 1940 and served until 1945 in the 6th Engineers and 14th Air Force. Interviewed by Janet Johannes on Jan 25, 2007, Bird talked about military experiences in the Second World War. He was attended grade school in Lincoln, Kansas, and five different high schools because his father was in the oil business. His parents were Henry and Lillian Howard Bird. His wife was Norma Jean Hornbeck. The interview took place in Plainville, Kansas. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the nine community institutions that received these grants. The transcript from the interview is presented here; the original video copy of the interview is available through the Ellis County Historical Society (Hays) and through the Kansas State Historical Society.
