A carte-de-visite of John Henry D. Brown,(1829-1896), the Sheriff of Douglas County, Kansas from 1862 to 1863. During Quantrill's raid on Lawrence, Kansas, on August 21,1863, Brown protected himself from Border Ruffians by hiding under his home with the help of his wife Rhoda and sister-in-law Maggie Stevens.
