“Smith Guerillas” again did a noble work yesterday not the least portion of which is due to the 1st Division – I respectfully ask as an act of justice and honor fairly won that Col W.L. McMillan 95th Ohio Infantry and Col L. F. Hubbard 5th Minnesota Infantry Commanding 1st & 2nd Brigades respectively be appointed Brigadier General.  Also Col. S. G. Hill 35th Iowa Infantry who commanded the 3rd Brigade and was killed while gallantly charging the enemy’s works.  I respectfully recommend be gazetted a Brigadier General
