Governor Henry J. Allen posed with Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science students. The students were on their way to work in the coal mines in southeast Kansas. On November 1, 1919, 10,000 coal miners went out on strike. The state took over the operation of the coal mines using college students and ex-service men. These students were part of the volunteers. The strike ended on December 10, 1919.
