Baseball - The Summer Pasttime
Baseball is referred to as the summer pastime but it is more than a pastime to many families that participate in the Little League, high school baseball, American Legion, softball leagues for men and women, the minor leagues and the "majors." This involves not only the players but managers and umpires who participate in the games but also parents, sponsors, and fans. Baseball and softball are the focus of a "collecting day" on October 29 sponsored by the Kansas Historical Society and the Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame. We are asking people that have photographs, scrapbooks, posters, tournament and game programs to donate them or loan them to the Kansas Historical Society. We would like images of organized teams that show team members or shots of games, sand lot/pick-up games, baseball stadiums, etc. Loaned items will be held in secure storage until they are scanned and returned to their owners. Items will be placed on Kansas Memory.
The collecting event will be held in the lobby of the Kansas Museum of History from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on October 29, 2013. The geographic focus of this event is Shawnee County but the Historical Society collects materials documenting the activities of Kansans across the state.
This exhibit has baseball and softball related images and items from Shawnee County. There are several photos of the Topeka Owls, a minor league team. Photos of several other baseball and softball teams are included in the exhibit as are several ball parks and neighborhood ball games. We hope you will enjoy these images and share photos and other memorabilia that you have with the Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame and the Kansas Historical Society on Oct. 29 or with the Kansas Historical Society at any time in the future.
