Carl was killed in action on October 9,1918. He was born in Rich Hill, Missouri, January 24, 1886. He graduated from Argentine High School in 1904 and Kansas University in 1909 with a degree in engineering. He served as Argentine City Engineer and as Assistant City Engineer after Argentine was annexed by Kansas City, Kansas.

Paper membership card for the Birthday Club sponsored by Whizzo the Clown. Whizzo was a character created by Frank Wiziarde, a children's entertainer in Kansas City, Kansas. He was best known for his children's television show that aired on local stations in Kansas City and Topeka from 1954 to 1987. Wiziarde was born in Westmoreland, Kansas in 1916 and soon joined his family's traveling circus act. In the late 1940s Wiziarde transitioned to broadcasting, but merged the two professions to entertain children.

Born in Topeka, Kansas, about 1867, Hannah Headlee was an artist, quilter, teacher and china painter. "The Iris" one of her quilting masterpieces is in the Kansas State Historical Society's museum.


William Walker

William Walker

A photograph of Governor William Walker who was born in Gibraltar, Michigan on March 5, 1799. He was a member of the Wyandot tribe, and after acquiring his education, Walker worked on behalf of the North American Indians. He became a leader and counselor to the Wyandot nation and devoted many years of his life to their interests. In 1843, Walker came to Kansas with his tribe, where he remained for much of his life. In 1853, Walker was appointed provisional governor of the Nebraska Territory. He died in Kansas City, Missouri on February 13, 1874. The photograph was probably taken in the late 1850s and copied by Hansford in the 1890s.

This brochure advertises the services of four trains of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. Two of the trains are from Chicago and Omaha and the other two are from St. Louis and Kansas City. The trains from Chicago and Omaha are the "Rocky Mountain Limited" and the "Colorado and California Express" The two trains from St. Louis and Kansas City are the "Colorado-Pacific Coast Express" and the "Colorado Flyer." The daily schedules for each train are included. Such features as electric lighted cars; a buffet-library-observation car with barber, valet and Victrola recitals; and telegraphic bulletins.

A letter written from Lawrence, Kansas, by M.R. Brown, addressed to her son, William Brown, who was in college in New York. Brown begins by discussing the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. She discusses the 300 African Americans who had fled slavery and were now living in Lawrence, and the efforts of an African-American minister in the community. Brown expresses fear that Lawrence would be attacked by Missourians. She also gives news of Leigh R. Webber, a Kansas soldier who often wrote to members of the Brown family.

This poster advertises excursion trains from fifty-one towns in Kansas to "Kansas City, The Heart of America, with its many attractions." Attractions noted were: Missouri National Players; 5 vaudeville acts; first run pictures; "The Popular Sin"; 7 acts vaudeville featuring Bert Lytell; and "Ben Hur". Theaters included were: Missouri, Main Street, Pantages, Newman, Orpheum, and Shubert. Ticket prices ranged from $.75 from Holliday to $5.50 from Arkansas City.
