Industrial mental health division of the Menninger Foundation, Topeka, Kansas

This photograph of Dr. Harry Levinson shows him interviewing men at the Henry Manufacturing Co. as part of his work in the Industrial Mental Health Division. The Menninger Clinic is a facility for mental-health treatment, education, research, and prevention. It was started in 1919 in Topeka, Kansas, by Dr. Charles F. Menninger and his two sons, Karl and William. It grew into a recognized center for the treatment of mental illness, teaching about mental health, and research in the field. The Industrial Mental Health Division was part of the Preventive Psychiatry Department.

William L. Hesse, Rossville, Kansas

William L. Hesse, Rossville, Kansas

This picture of William L. Hesse, Rossville, Kansas, lumber dealer, was taken February 9, 1961. The J. Thomas Lumber Company started in Rossville in the 1880s. James B. Hall was manager for several years and in 1909 Mr. Vawter became manager. William Hesse started work at the yard in 1925, and in 1932 bought a half interest in the business and, in 1943, bought the other half. It then became the Hesse Lumber Company. His sons, Bill and Burns succeeded him in business. This photograph is provided through a pilot project to host unique cultural heritage materials from local libraries on Kansas Memory and was accomplished by mutual agreement between the Northeast Kansas Library System, the Rossville Community Library, and the Kansas Historical Society.

Also covered are county statistics for population, acreages, productions, live stock, assessed valuation of property, and a listing of churches for each county. State statistics, crop and livestock statistics are also included.

Pair of hand-carved wooden clogs with pointed toes. Mostly unpainted, except for gold on inside and sole. Worn at Theodore Weichselbaum's brewery in Ogden, Kansas. Weichselbaum's brew house opened in Ogden in 1871 and employed several German brewers until state prohibition forced its closure in 1881. Wooden clogs were worn on the brewery floor and cleaned daily after wearing.

Regal China produced this "Trophy Bottle" in 1971 for the James B. Beam Distilling Company. Designed for the 125th anniversary of William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody's birth, it was filled with a fifth of 100-month old Beam bourbon whiskey. Some commemorative bottles were personalized and given to Cody descendents present at the August 11-14, 1971 celebration at Cody's boyhood in Leavenworth, Kansas.

This gazetteer lists all of the towns in Kansas in 1880 alphabetically, regardless of size. The information for each town includes the population, information about the town, and a list of business people in that community. The town listings begin on page 65. The classified business directory (see general index for page number) groups information by business, profession, industry, etc. for the entire state. The gazetteer also includes advertisements for many businesses, lists of state and county officials, district courts and judges. There is a general index on page 11 but it does not include the town listings. An index to advertisers begins on page 13. The gazetteer also contains a business directory for Kansas City, Missouri.
