Don Davis and Leonard Woods are shown handling the requests for supplies from other Menninger staff. Dr. C.F. Menninger and his sons, Dr. Karl and Dr. Will, formed a group psychiatry practice in 1919. The Menninger Clinic as a sanitarium was established in 1925 with the purchase of a farm house and admittance of 12 patients. The philosophy was that mental illness could be treated with an integrated medical, psychodynamic, and developmental approach for the total health of patients.

This is a photograph of a mill in Topeka, Kansas. Clarence and Janice Fornwald took the photograph while they were on their honeymoon. They started from Pittsburg, California, and traveled through Utah, Kansas, Wyoming, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., New York, New England, and eventually to Quebec, Canada. A restaurant with a "lunch" sign is in the foreground.

Two unidentified men are shown loading a basket of laundry. In 1925, the Menninger Sanitarium Corporation purchased a farmhouse on the west edge of Topeka, Kansas. The farmhouse became the inpatient clinic and the surrounding 20 acres were developed with buildings and gardens to become the "East Campus" of the Menninger Foundation.

Here are two photographs showing seventeen head of draft horses consigned and sold at Bechtelheimer's auction in Topeka, Kansas. The businesses in the photograph are identified as C. W. Armstrong's horseshoeing on the left, located at 918 North Kansas Avenue, and M. B. Bechtelheimer's Horses & Mules bought sold and exchanged sales barn at 916 North Kansas Avenue.

This photograph shows a tri-county rural electrification meeting held at the H-H Hall in Solomon, Kansas. At the beginning of the meeting, people were asked to raise their hands if they were interested in forming a rural electric cooperative. Nearly 100 per cent of the attendees from Dickinson, Saline and Ottawa Counties were in favor of a cooperative. Paul R. Chilen is the orchestra conductor.

Histories and descriptions of ferries and ferry companies that used the Kansas River. Some of the ferries listed are the Wyandot National, Silas Armstrong, Santa Fe Road, Eureka, Muncie, Grinter, Toulee, Keeler, Chouteau also known as the Campbell, and Tiblow also known as the Parrish. The oldest of these is reported to be the Grinter Ferry which was established in 1831.

C.C. McPherson opened the McPherson Livery barn in October 1879. In 1883, he kept three buggies, two spring wagons and nine head of horses. He expanded his business to house more in the early 1900s and had a "carry-all" which was particularly popular with the young people who often rented it for their outings. Ed Stovall, pictured, was an employee. Made by the Wilson-Hurd Company of Wisconsin, the sign has slots for the cardboard inserts printed with names of flavors. Scott Brothers was founded in 1879 by Harry C. Scott and claimed to be the oldest ice cream manufacturer in Kansas.

Hand painted lanternslide in a handmade wood frame. Slide depicts a man punching a "Saloon" signpost. The slide can be manipulated so the man's arm moves in a punching motion. This slide is part of a collection made by Samuel Reader between 1866 and 1913. Reader was a Kansas farmer who was active in the early Topeka community. He built two homes, served in the Civil War, and wrote in a diary nearly every day for 64 years. Reader began painting slides in 1866 and continued throughout much of his life, holding magic lantern shows for the local community in his house and at church.
