These letters, spanning 1885 to 1888, are from residents of Anderson County, Kansas regarding state positions to Kansas Governor John Martin. There are letters of resignation and recommendations for individuals to fill vacancies in the county surgeon, office of coroner, and the county surveyor. The county surveyor endorsement, for A. R. Mumans also has a signed petition. Established as one of the original 33 counties in 1855, Anderson County was named for proslavery speaker of the territorial legislature, Joseph C. Anderson.

Doctor's bag

Black leather doctor's bag with brass hardware. Carried by Dr. George Campbell McKnight (1866-1942) of Hiawatha, Kansas. After graduating from Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1892, he returned to Hiawatha and entered into a surgical and medical practice. In addition to practicing medicine, McKnight also served as Mayor of Hiawatha from 1914 to 1920. The bag was made by Hettinger Brothers Manufacturing Company of Kansas City, Missouri.

Jeffrey William Colyer, M.D.

A formal portrait of the 47th Kansas Governor Jeff Colyer. A fifth generation Kansan from Hays, Governor Colyer is a surgeon who has volunteered in conflict zones such as Afghanistan, Iraq, the Balkans, Libya, Africa and Rwanda. He served as an international affairs fellow under U.S. presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. He was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives in 2006 and the Kansas Senate in 2008. From 2010 to 2018 he served as lieutenant governor under Governor Sam Brownback.

Two neurosurgeons of the Menninger Clinic are shown scrubbing for surgery. The Menninger Clinic is a facility for mental-health treatment, education, research, and prevention. It was started in 1919 in Topeka, Kansas, by Dr. Charles F. Menninger and his two sons, Karl and William.
The Menninger Clinic philosophy of treatment was the bio-psycho-social approach. This philosophy of treatment integrated medical, psychodynamic, developmental, and family systems to treat the total health of patients. Neurosurgery is part of the medical approach.

Tonsillotome

Tonillotome for performing tonsillectomies. Steel rod with a ring at the end. Pulling back on the handle draws a guillotine-style blade across the ring to excise the tonsil. A skewer can also be extended across the ring to hold the tonsil in place during the procedure and extract it with the instrument. Charles Truax and Company was founded in Chicago in 1887 as a partnership between Charles Truax, Frank C. Greene, and Charles W. Bassett. Sometime after 1893 the name was changed to Truax, Greene & Company, and the business was dissolved in 1920.
