Letters to Kansas Governor Humphrey concerning the appointment of Census Taker for counties within the State of Kansas. A letter from Seth Woodward of Eldorado, Kansas asks the Governor to appoint him as Census-Taker, and if he does not have the power to do so, to inform him who does. A separate letter from S. A. Burch, Supervisor of Census, writes to Governor Humphrey to acknowledge his request to appoint Mr. Tittsworth of Pardee as Census Taker in Atchison County. Additional letters are from prospective candidates applying for the position as Census Taker.

In the letter Henderson requests to be appointed the position. In the late 19th century it was the responsibility of each census taker also referred to as enumerator to personally visit each dwelling in their subdivision to obtain the correct number of each member or person occupying the dwelling.

Thomas P. Marsh in Lawrence, Kansas, wrote to George L. Stearns regarding political activities in the area. Marsh discussed attending the Free State party convention and the support for the Topeka Constitution in Lawrence and the surrounding areas. He also discussed the census and how it compared to the number of voters in the territory. During the "Bleeding Kansas" period, voter fraud was common as Missourians poured into the territory to support a pro-slavery legislature.
